Podland

Support

Podland is a one-person project. Mail gets read and answered, usually within a few days.

Fastest route to a fix: email support@podland.app with your iPhone model, your iOS version, and — if it's about a specific episode — the name of the show and the episode. If something crashed or behaved strangely, open Settings, tap Export logs under Diagnostics, and attach the file.

Getting Podland

Podland is distributed through Apple's TestFlight, not the App Store. You'll need the free TestFlight app from Apple and an invitation link. It runs on iPhone, on iOS 17 or later.

TestFlight builds expire after 90 days. When yours does, TestFlight will offer the newer build.

Common questions

Ads are still playing. What's wrong?

Work through these in order:

  • Check the toggle. Smart Ad Skip is off until you turn it on, in Settings.
  • Give the episode time. An episode has to be fetched and analysed on the server before its ad ranges exist. A show published minutes ago will often play unskipped the first time and skip cleanly later.
  • Check the episode is coming through Podland. Skipping only arms when the audio being played is the copy the server analysed. If the app fell back to the publisher's file, there is nothing to line the ad ranges up against, and it will play straight through.
  • Some ads simply aren't caught. Detection is good, not perfect. Host-read sponsorships that blend into the conversation are the usual misses.

If an episode should have skipped and didn't, send the show and episode name. That is genuinely useful — it goes into the set of examples the detection is measured against.

It skipped part of the actual show.

Sorry. Skip back and you can mark the range as wrong; your correction is remembered for that episode and survives the server re-analysing it later.

Reports of these are worth sending too. A false skip costs more than a missed ad, so they are weighted accordingly.

How do I add podcasts?

A new install starts empty on purpose — no bundled starter shows, no recommendations. Add subscriptions by feed URL, or bring your whole library across at once with Import OPML in the Library screen. Most podcast apps can export an OPML file, which is a plain list of the feeds you follow.

You can export your own list back out at any time from Settings, under Subscriptions.

Where is the queue? Where is Up Next?

There isn't one, and that's deliberate rather than unfinished. Podland plays one episode: the one you chose. Nothing auto-advances into the next thing, nothing reorders behind your back, and there's no list to groom.

It's the single most common request and the answer is likely to stay no. Podland is trying to be a good player for the episode you actually want, not a system for managing a backlog.

Why do the next and previous buttons jump within the episode?

On a car stereo or a headset, next and previous track are mapped to skipping forward and back inside the episode, by the same intervals as the on-screen buttons. Since there's no queue, there is no next episode for them to move to, and jumping a few seconds is what you almost always want from a steering wheel.

How much space does Podland use?

Downloads are held to a 500 MB budget. When it fills, the oldest finished episodes are cleared first, and whatever you're currently listening to is never deleted out from under you. Settings shows the current usage and lets you delete individual downloads.

A download stopped or won't finish.

Downloads continue in the background and resume after an interruption, but iOS will hold them back on a poor connection or in Low Power Mode. Check that Background App Refresh is on for Podland in the iOS Settings app. If a download is stuck, delete it from Settings and start it again.

Voices are too quiet.

Turn on Volume Boost from the Now Playing screen. It lifts quiet speech without flattening the whole episode, which helps in a car or anywhere with background noise.

Does Podland sync between my devices?

No. There are no accounts, so there is nothing to sync through. Subscriptions and playback positions live on each device separately. Moving to a new phone means exporting an OPML file from the old one and importing it on the new one.

Is my listening private?

Partly, and the privacy policy spells out exactly where the line falls. Short version: no account and no name is ever attached to you, but the server does keep a record of which shows your install follows and which episodes it has asked for. Nothing is sold and no analytics or advertising SDK is involved.

Nothing loads at all.

Podland depends on one server. If it's down, feeds won't refresh and analysed audio won't play. Give it a while and try again. If it stays broken for more than a few hours, that's worth an email — it may not have been noticed yet.
